How to Train ChatGPT to Sound Like You (Not Like a Robot)

Every AI draft you have to heavily rewrite is a sign of the same missing step: the assistant does not know who you are. It writes for a generic professional because that is all you gave it. Ten minutes of setup fixes that permanently, and every future chat starts already sounding like you.
This guide covers the three layers that make AI sound like a person rather than a press release: custom instructions you set once, writing samples that teach your rhythm, and a repair prompt for the drafts that still come out stiff.
Layer 1: custom instructions, set once
Every major assistant has a settings page where you describe yourself and how you want answers. ChatGPT calls it custom instructions, and it quietly applies to every new conversation. Most people leave it blank, which is why their results feel generic. Let the AI write yours through an interview:
Help me write my custom instructions. Interview me one question at a time about: my job and industry, who I usually write for, the tone I like, how long I want answers, formats I prefer, and things I never want (buzzwords, filler, over-explaining). Then produce two short paragraphs I can paste into settings: one describing me, one describing how you should respond.
Paste the result into Settings, and notice the difference in the very next chat. The output stops being addressed to nobody in particular and starts being addressed to your actual audience.
Layer 2: teach it your rhythm with real samples
Instructions describe your style. Samples demonstrate it, and demonstration always wins. Find two or three pieces you wrote and were happy with, then have the AI reverse-engineer what makes them yours:
Here are 3 things I wrote: [paste them]. Study my writing and describe my style in detail: typical sentence length, how formal I am, words and phrases I actually use, how I open and close, my rhythm, what I never do. Then write that description as a style guide I can paste at the start of future chats.
Save that style guide somewhere handy. Pasting it above any writing request is the single biggest quality jump available to a non-technical AI user, and it works in every assistant, as the practical guides at Zapier and elsewhere consistently find.
Layer 3: the repair prompt for stiff drafts
Even well-briefed AI occasionally produces something that reads like corporate wallpaper. Do not rewrite it by hand. Point at the problem:
This draft does not sound like me. Fix it: - Cut every phrase that sounds like corporate filler (delve, leverage, spearhead, passionate, robust, seamless). - Use my normal words instead of formal synonyms. - Vary the sentence lengths; real people do not write in identical rhythms. - Keep every fact and the structure exactly as they are. Then tell me the three phrases that gave it away.

Where this pays off most

One honest limit
AI can match your rhythm and vocabulary. It cannot supply your judgment, your history with a client, or the joke only your team gets. Read every draft once and add the human line the AI could not know to write. That line is usually the reason people reply.
